The logistics sector is closely watching as Gemalink Phase 2 is going to double capacity in Vietnam. On April 17, 2026, CMA CGM and Gemadept broke ground on the VND 8.4 trillion expansion at the Cai Mep-Thi Vai port. By late 2027, this upgrade will increase annual throughput from 1.7 million to 3 million TEU.
Operating at full utilization since 2021, the facility processed 6.5 million TEU over five years. This immense demand highlighted the urgent need for expansion to handle rising transcontinental trade.
To accommodate 250,000 DWT mega vessels, the joint venture is deploying state-of-the-art infrastructure. Development milestones include:
- A 450-meter quay extension featuring a 285-meter main berth.
- Container yard expansion from 32 to 44 hectares.
- Five new electrified Ship-to-Shore (E-STS) cranes, totaling 13 units.
Pioneering a “Smart & Green Port” model, the project exclusively utilizes electrified crane systems to meet ESG standards. As Gemalink Phase 2 is going to double capacity in Vietnam, it cements the nation’s goal of becoming Southeast Asia’s leading maritime hub by 2050.
