The maritime industry is witnessing a profound shift as the world’s largest China all-electric container ship disrupts traditional supply chains. Operated by COSCO, the 10,000-DWT vessels, known as the Greenwater series, have established regular river-to-sea liner services along the Yangtze River. This milestone signals a breakthrough in zero-emission freight operations for logistics experts.
Designed for heavy inland transport, the China all-electric container ship features a length of 119.8 meters and a 700 TEU capacity. Unlike older short-range vessels, it integrates a modular architecture built for routes between hubs like Shanghai and Nanjing.
The operational viability of this vessel relies on an innovative swappable battery ecosystem. Key highlights include:
- A massive capacity exceeding 50,000 kWh, housed in standard 20-foot containers.
- The ability to equip up to 24 battery boxes, delivering 80,000 kWh for extended voyages.
- A fast crane-swapping mechanism that eliminates in-port charging delays.
By exchanging depleted batteries at terminals, operators maintain strict sailing schedules without range anxiety.
The environmental metrics are unprecedented. The China all-electric container ship saves 3,900 kilograms of fuel per 100 nautical miles. Annually, a single vessel is projected to reduce carbon dioxide emissions by 2,918 tons, equating to removing over 2,035 cars from the road.
