The maritime industry is witnessing a massive pivot toward sustainable operations, with the Shenzhen Port green shipping transformation leading the charge in the Asia-Pacific region. As one of the world’s busiest container hubs, Shenzhen is scaling up its infrastructure to meet stringent decarbonization targets and establish comprehensive green shipping networks.
A historic milestone in this transition occurred on January 21, 2026, when Shenzhen Port successfully executed its first ship-to-ship green methanol bunkering operation. The bunkering vessel Daqing 268 supplied 200 tons of green methanol to the COSCO Shipping Carnation at Yantian Port. Supplied by a local biomass facility, this alternative fuel achieves a purity of 99.9% and reduces lifecycle greenhouse gas emissions by over 85%, officially establishing the region as a highly capable hub for sustainable marine fuels.
Beyond alternative fuels, the port is rapidly expanding its onshore power supply. By late 2025, Ocean Network Express (ONE) integrated mobile shore power boxes at Shenzhen’s major terminals, allowing vessels to replace diesel generators with shore-based electricity to drastically lower noise and greenhouse gas emissions during port calls. Furthermore, international collaboration is accelerating this shift. The Shenzhen Port Group and the Port of Long Beach signed a strategic agreement to develop advanced green shipping corridors, focusing on zero-carbon terminals and clean technology deployments across the Pacific Rim.
